For the past 6 months my spouse and I have been travelling across the United States in 5th wheel and learning about living in a 35 foot “home” day in and day out.

We started in Michigan October 4th and as of this writing (March 12th) we are in the Hill Country of Texas. We are currently staying in a private RV park along the Frio Rio River. The weather is lovely today – sunny and 80 degrees but for most of the 6 months this has not been the case.

For most of the past 6 months it has rained, rained and rained. We learned just where and why we had a small leak in our trailer and more importantly we learned how to quickly fix the leaks.

We have learned that we brought way to much stuff and the wrong stuff. Less is more and what is actually needed is not what we thought would be needed.

We have met many wonderful people from all over the United States and Canada. We have heard the pros and cons of travelling full time, part time and weekenders only. We have learned which brand of motorhome people believe is the best, and that varies widely, depending on what they own. We have also heard why we should have a diesel pusher, or a gas Class A, Class B, Class C or a trailer or a 5th wheel, all of which again depends on who is doing the talking and what they personally own.

We have found wonderful often the beaten track places to eat and see and we have been to some widely advertised tourist traps that were not worth the price of admission.

The people who travel via motorhomes are a widely diverse group, socially, economically, and politically. I will say up front we are NOT golfers and we have found that many winter travelers or “snowbirds” are golf fanatics which leaves us on the outside looking in. Even with that being the case we have absolutely no intention of taking up golf. There is so much to do and see in the United States – golf is just not our thing.

One of the most beneficial skills we are trying to master is communication. We think we know what each other is saying but then again maybe not. For now just let me say we still married and yes, we are still speaking to each other. He is the driver, and I am the navigator. He is the photographer and I am photoshop whiz. He is the fixer, and I am very good at advising him of everything that needs to be fixed.

We are enjoying the journey and becoming well healed and well travelled along the way.
